We enable high-potential businesses in Tanzania to grow by providing them with access to personalised and strategic capacity building, affordable capital, and relevant networks via three core initiatives:

  • The Anza Accelerator: an 8-month intensive  and tailored journey that builds the capacity of entrepreneurs and businesses through strategic consulting and skills trainings
  • The Anza Growth Fund: a fund that provides affordable and flexible financing to our entrepreneurs, giving them the funding and tools they need to expand their businesses
  • Kili Hub: Tanzania’s largest co-working space which provides access to networks, mentors, and collaboration opportunities

We run a lean team of around 20 based across Moshi, Arusha, Lindi, and Mtwara serving over 280 entrepreneurs. By 2020, we envision operating in 6 zones, serving over 930 entrepreneurs, and contributing to the creation of 7,500 jobs.  This is a time of exciting growth, and we are seeking to hire a Managing Director to support this ambitious journey.

 

Job Description

You will lead the Anza team to execute on our strategy, in a cohesive way between our 3 core offerings, ensuring we grow to new heights and serve clients effectively. As the Managing Director, it is your role to be a leader among leaders and develop a culture of trust, creativity, and continuous improvement at Anza.

Alongside oversight of programmes, you will be responsible for advancing Anza’s business and financial model, specifically the earned revenue arm while the CEO focuses on philanthropic funding and partnership opportunities. Your role will be to ensure Anza has the internal systems and processes necessary to scale and grow to 4 more regions over the next 3 years. You should be up to the challenge of managing a growing team across the country and ensuring we’re delivering value to a diverse range of clients.

Reports to: CEO
Responsible for: Anza Management Team (4) – Anza Accelerator’s Client Services Director, Kili Hub’s Manager, Anza Growth Fund’s Manager, and Anza’s Marketing and Comms Manager
Duration: 3-year contract with 6-month probation period and potential to extend upon mutual interest

Your responsibilities will include:

Programmes Oversight, Impact and Growth (45%)

  • Oversee all programmatic elements of the Anza Accelerator, Kili Hub, and Anza Growth Fund, their delivery, impact and revenue contribution
  • Work with management team to identify, test, and modify services to fit diverse client needs as well as Anza’s “big picture” vision
  • Supervise and work with Client Services Director to ensure that department meets sales and service delivery goals in support of the Anza Accelerator’s growing client base
  • Work closely with Anza Growth Fund management to ensure portfolio performance and participate in investment committee meetings to ensure Anza invests in and supports the right businesses for Tanzania
  • Supervise and support Kili Hub management to ensure that department meets sales and community goals
  • Work closely with the Board of Directors and M&E lead to track organisation metrics in order to inform and constantly iterate on our organisational goals and resourcing


Strategy & Management (25%)

  • Manage the Tanzania-based management team (Client Services Director, Anza Growth Fund Director, Kili Hub Director and Marketing & Comms Manager)
  • Work closely with the CEO, Director of Finance and Board of Directors to develop strategies for the achievement of Anza’s vision, as the MD of all programme areas it will be your responsibility to ensure strategies can be executed
  • Lead annual and quarterly in-country planning processes and staff goal setting, in alignment with Anza’s vision and short, medium, and long-term goals
  • Provide insightful and analytical updates to management, working as a partner and thought-leader
  • Ensure that the Anza Board of Directors is properly apprised on strategic direction, policy change, financial health, risks, legal and compliance matters, and all other matters required to advise the organization
  • Lead all All-Staff meetings, and Senior Management team meetings, drive conversations with staff and management to ensure all are involved in strategic planning
  • Oversee HR within the organization, including maintaining and developing organizational structure and culture, maintaining job descriptions, hiring key positions, and supporting managers to do the same
  • Drive staff performance within the organization, including helping managers to set KPIs, quarterly performance check-ins, and annual review processes


Revenue Generation & Partnership Delivery (20%)

  • Work with each Programme Director to ensure we have a clear revenue generation strategy for each programme area (Anza Accelerator, Anza Growth Fund and Kili Hub) and these are being executed on
  • In collaboration with the CEO and the Fundraising Manager, design proposals for new institutional contracts and fee-for-service engagements that complement Anza’s capabilities and advance Anza’s mission
  • Manage and allocate human and finance resources in order to execute against contracts
  • Serve as an in-country point-of-contact for all partnerships ensuring strong client satisfaction and strong service delivery


Oversee Financial Management (10%)

  • In partnership with the Director of Finance, develop and manage the annual Anza budget
  • Assist Director of Finance to conduct month-end meetings with each department manager: actual vs budget, review P&L, cash flow, and make strategic decisions on use of funds
  • Review and approve filings for taxes, supervising processes for accounting
  • Participate in annual audit process

 

About You

A successful candidate will have previous significant leadership and management experience of a complex organization, and a deep understanding of the challenges for entrepreneurs and SME development in Tanzania.    In addition, you’ll be a good fit for this role if:

  • You have managed team leaders before, enabling them to get the desired results through and with their teams
  • You have managed budgets of $500,000 or more before, with a sharp eye for budget variance
  • You are able to identify and drive revenue generation opportunities
  • You have managed multiple programmes
  • You have a strong understanding of the needs of entrepreneurs in a operations, talent, and legal sense, either from past consulting, from your own self-started businesses or from a similar general manager position
  • You communicate effectively locally and internationally to a variety of stakeholders
  • You have unrelenting perseverance and personal integrity
  • Your critical thinking skills are a crucial asset and you know how to take the team along in your strategy journey
  • You hold a Bachelor Degree ideally in a business-related field and ideally have advanced education qualifications (i.e. Master degree)
  • We have a strong preference to hire a Tanzanian national fluent in written and spoken English and Kiswahili. Non-Tanzanian applicants with over 5 years’ experience in East Africa are encouraged to apply
